Health and Wellness News

Every month we publish a menu and on the back of the menu we provide updates and information on our Natural Health and Wellness programs.  We hope you will join with us as we celebrate Health and Wellness and provide our progress in the areas of organic agriculture, nutrition, and natural health.  Our Wellness meetings occur monthly and focus on several different areas:  (1) Nutrition/Natural Health and Organic Agriculture, (2) Creating a positive Culture for Learning and supporting the Mental Health of our Students and Staff, (3) and Fitness and Athletics.  Also, we have within our newsletter a request that our families send us pictures of themselves enjoying outdoor activities together.  Our Health and Wellness newsletter is HERE (and at the bottom of this page).  We hope you enjoy it!

Parent Teacher Conference Night

Parent Conference Night is Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 5 – 7 p.m.

These meetings are for students who are underperforming academically or are in danger of failing. Teachers will contact families to schedule appointments. Please encourage your student to attend the meeting, as it will help your child take ownership of his/her classroom performance.

If you do not hear from a specific teacher of interest, please email that faculty member directly. If you cannot be accommodated on Wednesday evening, other arrangements will be made.

Musical Theater Auditions

Auditions for the musical theater production, Into the Woods, will be held on Thurs, Nov 7th (4:20p-6:00p) and Friday, Nov 8th (3:00p-5:00p) in Mr. Stout's Room #311 (Gym Building).

Fall Festival

Last week, the Odyssey thespians (musical theater department) attended the Odyssey Eldron campus Fall Festival. They organized a theater scavenger hunt where students dressed up as characters from musicals they performed in the past. Participants had to find the characters who were hiding on the festival grounds. This was a great advertisement for our theater department and was enjoyed by all.

Gathering of Knights

Titan Band and Color Guard Performed at Space Coast Jr/Sr High School for the our District Marching MPA (music performance assessment) on Saturday, October 19th. Their diligent preparation for their 2024 show, Gathering of Knights, was a huge success. Congrats to all!

Our senior Titan Bowlers: Zoie Benedict, Mary & Kaitlin Haywood, Gabriella Dancey-Renz

Bowling

We are excited to announce that our girls' bowling team placed 3rd in the district tournament! A special shout out to Hailey King, who will be representing us at the state level with her impressive 555 series.

The boys’ team also played well but unfortunately did not advance to the afternoon baker match. Notable performances included Robert Pinkerton with a high score of 182 and Kevin Pinkerton, who led with a score of 196.

Congratulations to all our bowlers for their hard work and dedication!

ESports

David Layfield coaches the Esports team at Odyssey Charter Jr/Sr High School. As Esports continues to expand globally, the team is committed to nurturing young talent, fostering teamwork, and preparing our students for success in this competitive and rapidly growing industry. These players are not only passionate about Esports but also dedicated students. Through gaming, they learn critical skills like communication, leadership, and strategic thinking.

The team needs sponsorship and support to continue growing the program. Please contact Mr. Layfield at layfieldd@odysseycharterschool.com to discuss how you can collaborate with Odyssey to create a mutually beneficial partnership that showcases your brand while helping the Esport team reach new heights.

The Esports team competes in Rainbow Six, Valorant, Rocket League, Smash Bros, and Brawhalla and has already seen incredible student enthusiasm. They need financial assistance to provide players with the necessary resources to excel, including updated equipment, tournament entry fees, and travel expenses for regional and national competitions.

By sponsoring the high school Esports team, your company will have the unique opportunity to connect with a highly engaged, tech-savvy audience. Esports at the high school level is an exciting and fast-growing space, and partnering with us will place your brand at the forefront of this movement while supporting the next generation of competitive gamers.

Here’s how your sponsorship could benefit both the Esports team and your brand:

Virtual Microscope

Last week Dr. Caleb's students were learning to use a virtual microscope simulation on the optical properties of a compound microscope found on the link below: https://www.ncbionetwork.org/iet/microscope/

When you look at a letter "e" under a microscope in a virtual microscope lab - it appears flipped upside down. This phenomenon is due to the way light travels through the microscope's lens system, creating an inverted image. As a fundamental property of most compound microscopes, this inversion causes the "e" to appear with the open part facing to the left when viewed through the eyepiece. Through the advanced features of Lanschool, educators can guide students in understanding such optical illusions and the principles of microscopy, fostering a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of scientific observation and analysis.

Socratic in US History

Ms. Beauchamp’s 8th grade US History class took advantage of an extended class on Friday, October 18th, due to PSAT testing. To dive deep into the content of their unit, students studied how geography affects a civilization. They used their notes and other resources to have a Socratic discussion. Then, they used these notes to write an essay explaining their new thinking. Well done, students and Mrs. Ott, who has been their temporary substitute while Mrs. Beauchamp is out.

AVID Tutorials

On Tuesday, Oct 22nd, 8th-grade students volunteered their time to support 6th graders in Mr. Hill’s AVID class who were learning how to navigate the tutorial process. The purpose of AVID tutorials is to provide help in academic courses. Students prepare for tutorials by completing a Tutorial Request Form (TRF). The TRF requires students to review their notes and organize their thinking.  It helps them identify essential vocabulary and summarize key learning points.

During tutorials, students read their TRF to the group and share their understanding of the material. Then, the group asks the presenter questions to help deepen their knowledge of the material. Tutorials are a critical ingredient in academic success.
